McDonald’s Issues Recall of Shrek-Themed Drinking Glasses: Designs on Glass Exteriors Contained Cadmium
On June 4, 2010, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that McDonalds Corporation had issued a recall of drinking glasses offered to customers as part of the fast food chain’s promotion of the 2010 release of Shrek Forever After movie.
The designs on the glasses were found to contain cadmium. According to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), cadmium and compounds that contain cadmium are classified as human carcinogens (cancer-causing substances).
Given the collectible nature of the glasses, the CPSC has also warned consumers that it is illegal to resell or attempt to resell these products. Consumers offering the glasses for sale on Internet auction Web sites are required to delete their listings and return their glasses to a McDonald’s location to obtain a refund.
