Medical Malpractice News: Sarcoidosis
Medical Malpractice News: Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that produces small microscopic lumps of cells called granulomas which grow and clump together. When granuloma “clumps” form in an organ, it affects normal function in the affected organ.
Sarcoidosis most commonly affects the lungs, lymph nodes, eyes, skin and liver. It can also affect the brain, heart, bones and joints. In rare cases, it can affect the thyroid, breasts, kidneys and reproductive organs.
Sarcoidosis affects tens of thousands of adults in the United States. Because many sarcoidosis patients show no acute symptoms, it can be difficult to diagnose.
Fewer than five percent of the U.S. population deaths are caused by sarcoidosis. Deaths related to the disease are typically caused by the damage the disease causes in an organ, which ultimately impacts the body’s ability to fight off an infection in an affected organ.
Increased awareness of the disease stems from the death of comedian Bernie Mac. Mac, who had suffered from sarcoidosis for many years, died in August 2008 from pneumonia. Doctors and other medical experts asked to comment on his condition and death have shared a similar opinion that sarcoidosis had affected the comedian’s lungs, causing him to be unable to fight off the infection which took his life.
