University of Illinois asked to pay $9-million medical malpractice settlement for traumatic births
July 24, 2008 – The University of Illinois Board of Trustees will be asked today to sign off on nearly $14 million in settlements in medical malpractice cases involving traumatic birth deliveries, said the Chicago Sun Times.
The settlements involve two separate cases filed against the university in Cook County Circuit Court in 2004 and 2005.
In the 2004 malpractice lawsuit, the parents of an infant girl said physicians at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago failed to recognize signs of fetal distress during her birth; and failed to initiate an emergency delivery. This neglect resulted in a permanent neurological injury for their child.
The settlement will total $9 million, if approved by the board today. University officials recommended that the board approve the pay out.
