$4.7M medical malpractice settlement for hospital neglect
July 29, 2008 — Lawyers representing a 50-year-old New York woman, who is now in a coma after traumatic neck surgery at a local hospital, reached a $4.7 million settlement with hospital officials earlier this year.
The woman had entered surgery to remove her goiter, an enlarged thyroid gland in her neck, but did not receive proper medical treatment or care after surgery. This neglect prompted a medical malpractice lawsuit.
Lawyers showed that hospital employees failed to promptly come to the aid of the patient, who went into respiratory failure, sustained brain damage caused by lack of oxygen, and is now in a coma.
