Medical Center faces legal action over liposuction
ordeal
August 4, 2008 – A 39-year-old businessman and veteran from Quincy,
Massachusetts, filed medical
malpractice charges against a renowned medical center for not owning up to
its errors in the hours and days after his traumatic liposuction procedure last
June.
According to the malpractice
lawsuit, Beth Israel faces legal action after a simple cosmetic procedure
evolved into days of pain and suffering for the patient.
The patient, described in news reports as a somewhat portly man, decided on
the common liposuction procedure, which required general anesthesia and was
expected to take 60 to 90 minutes – but lasted nearly seven hours.
A review of medical records, court files and Board of Registration in
Medicine data, conducted and reported on by the Boston Herald, discovered
that:
Beth Israel staff members never disclosed to the man what complications
occurred in the operating room;
The surgeon, who was fired after the operation, dictated a false
post-operative report after abandoning the surgery nearly five hours before the
procedure ended;
The patient’s post-operative complaints of bleeding, chills and pain were
described by the surgeon’s office as part of his “natural recovery process”;
The patient was hospitalized for bleeding at another hospital 10 days after
the difficult surgery.
