Preventing Medical Mistakes: New Health Prevention Chart Cites Smoking Risks
In June 2008, the Journal of Cancer Institute reported a new chart was released to physicians and clinics for posting in their offices. What makes this chart unique is that it includes several stark messages, including a new warning to protect yourself from making medical and health mistakes: stop smoking or die sooner.
According to the data compiled for the chart, a 55 year old male smoker is at the same risk of early death as a non-smoker more than 10 years his senior.
For women, the chart cites that smoking history increasingly worsens the chances of survival for female patients diagnosed with cancer. For non-smokers aged 60-70 years old, seven of every 1,000 women will die of breast cancer, while 14 of 1,000 will die of heart disease. But for smokers, the statistics show that 41 out of 1,000 women in this same age group will die of lung cancer, while 31 out of 1,000 women will die of heart disease.
