Medicare to Boost Payments to Doctors Using Electronic Prescriptions
Beginning in January 2009, the government announced an increase in Medicare reimbursements for doctors who use an electronic method to send prescriptions to a patient’s pharmacy rather than providing a paper prescription.
According to Michael Leavitt, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, adoption of electronic prescriptions is expected to save taxpayers $156 million over the next five years.
About 10 percent of family physicians currently use the electronic prescription software program. The program has life-saving benefits, as doctors can use it to check for potential drug interactions. Electronic prescriptions are expected to cut down on an estimated 1.5 million injuries each year caused by prescription- related errors.
