Weitz & Luxenberg is no longer taking Medtronic Cases
Times article: Surgical removal of a defective Medtronic lead or as a preventive measure is risky.
An article dated April 7, 2009 in the New York Times discusses the pulling of Metronic Sprint Fidelis leads off the market and how surgical removal of those leads from thousands of patients can be complicated and dangerous.
Our firm is currently involved in a Medtronic lawsuit to help clients with defective leads.
In 2007, Medtronic ceased selling its Sprint Fidelis leads after five patients who had the cables died.
Now, surgeons are realizing how serious a health problem those defective leads present.
"In the next few years, thousands of those patients may face risky surgical procedures to remove and replace the electrical cable, which connects a defibrillator to a chamber of the heart," the article reported.
According to the Times, Medtronic estimates that the cable has failed in a little more than 5 percent of patients after 45 months of being implanted.
However, as a preventive measure, some patients with working cables--also known as the "leads," are having them removed.
Already, four patients have died during extractions.
Health professionals worry the toll could quickly rise if such procedures are not performed by skilled doctors at medical centers that have performed many of the operations.
