New Mexico Demands Cap on Mercury Emissions

April 9, 2007

New Mexico, along with several other states has elected to place a cap on mercury emissions in the state. This is mainly in response to rising fear that mercury emissions coming from power plants that opt to ignore emissions rules are putting New Mexicans who live downwind in danger.

Currently, power plants in New Mexico release about 14,000 ounces of mercury per year now. This will change under the new cap when the amount will be reduced to 9,568 ounces per year between 2010 and 2017. After this, i.e. starting in 2018, these plants will only be allowed to emit 3,776 ounces of mercury per year.

This program, has been adopted by The New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board instead of a federal "cap and trade" program in which less environmentally savvy plants can purchase emissions points from plants that have already taken measures to reduce emissions.
