Mercury Spill Identified in Killingly Connecticut
April 19, 2007
Fish caught in Fivemile River in Killingly Connecticut
may be tainted with mercury. The EPA released a
statement today warning residents of the area that eating fish caught between
the Warsaw Pond dam and the Ballouville Pond may not be safe for human
consumption. This warning came directly after one hundred pounds of mercury was
found last month dumped along a country road near the river. The spill was
promptly cleaned up by federal and state environmental protection teams. The
source of the mercury remains unknown. At this time, officials do not know how
long the local environment was exposed to mercury before it was discovered. Mercury is a toxic substance, and all chances of
ingesting it must be avoided.
