Textile workers and mesothelioma: occupational exposure to asbestos

Textile workers with mesothelioma and lung cancer may get a free legal review via the form on this page.

In recent asbestos news, a former textile worker died of mesothelioma cancer after being exposed to asbestos nearly 50 years ago.

The textile worker was shocked to discover he had developed mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos, in August 2008.

The 73-year-old died on February 21 – six months after being diagnosed with the asbestos disease.

He had worked as a knitting manager from 1957 to 1961.

According to court documents, he described how during this time he had been required to supervise the replacement of an asbestos blanket on the steam presses.

Reportedly, the maintenance men would detach the asbestos-laden blanket, which would often break up and was quite crumbly, and discard it to the floor.

The asbestos blanket would give off fibers and dust and he and other workers on the floor would inhale and ingest it.

Asbestos blankets are made with fibers that are stitched, bonded, or woven into flexible blanket form. They were frequently used for high-temperature insulation or for fire and flame barriers.

The blankets were replaced every couple of months and it could take up to four hours.

Legal documents state the air was thick with dust and fibers and he would sometimes find them in his hair or on his face and clothes.
