In October 2001, J.R. “Rhio” O'Connor was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a serious cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Because of the position and nature of his tumors, his doctors told him he was not a candidate for surgery. The doctors also told him that chemotherapy would most likely be unsuccessful in extending his life and would adversely affect the quality of life in the time he had left.

Rather than accepting the doctors’ grim prognosis, Mr. O’Connor turned to other options. With the help of holistic clinicians, he began a course of alternative treatments to battle his disease. Using combinations of diet, mind-body medicine and dietary supplements, he is one of the rare patients who have survived for several years after developing the mesothelioma.
