In recent news about the dangers of asbestos, a woman won compensation after her husband died of mesothelioma. His exposure to asbestos occurred when he carried out building work.
The woman won the damages against her husband's former employers, who agreed to settle the case out of court.
Her husband was 70 when he died from mesothelioma cancer. The damages awarded to his wife were for his pain and suffering and for expenses during his illness and funeral.
The man had been exposed to asbestos in several ways. He had traveled around with his building work, doing general repairs and mechanics.
In the late '50s and early '60s, he carried out building extensions and putting asbestos sheets on roofs and relining boilers lagged with asbestos.
According to the lawsuit, he was not provided with any masks or given any warning of the dangers of asbestos dust which covered his hair and clothes when he was cutting and drilling.
And construction workers in the building trade still are exposed to asbestos during remodeling and demolition: Asbestos is often in old fireproofing, roofing, vinyl flooring, pipe and boiler insulation, and some roads and cement pipe and cement sheet products.
Thousands of building trade workers in the United States have died from diseases caused by work with — or near — asbestos without protection.
And 10,000 people are expected to die each year for the next 10 years because of past exposures to asbestos, according to Construction and Occupational Safety and Health officials.
Many in the building trade have come forward to say their work environment led to a diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer from asbestos.
