NEWS BULLETIN
Sept. 3, 2009 – A former police commissioner from Pasadena, Calif. passed away August 29, four months following his mesothelioma diagnosis.
Quincy A. James, 76, died from the asbestos-related cancer in his home and was likely exposed to asbestos during his work as a pipe fitter in the 1950s.
Pipe fitters and asbestos
The responsibility of a pipe fitter is to install and repair climate control systems that operate with boilers, radiators and oil burners.
Prior to the early 1980s, asbestos exposure was a very real threat when working with these systems. That's because asbestos insulation was used anywhere that heat or flame was a danger.
Mr. James worked as a pipe fitter for seven years to pay for his education at the University of Houston and the South Texas College of Law.
It is no coincidence that the fifth highest-ranking state in the nation for asbestos deaths is Texas. The nation's asbestos capitol is Los Angeles, California – not far from Pasadena where Mr. James died.
Loving daughter
Though he died of mesothelioma, Mr. James successfully battled other health conditions throughout his life, including polio as a child. He managed to overcome this adversity to become a Golden Gloves boxer during his time at the University of Houston. Mr. James also beat prostate cancer 20 years ago.
“He was never a person to say, ‘Woe is me,’” said his daughter. “I never heard my dad complain, even through this.”
Family and friends remember James as a man dedicated to public service throughout his life. He served as City Commissioner and oversaw the Pasadena police force as police commissioner for two years.
