MESOTHELIOMA CANCER SYMPTOMS

Contact Weitz & Luxenberg for a free, private case review.

There are several types of mesothelioma, each identified by their cancer symptoms. The most common type is called “pleural mesothelioma,” which affects the tissue lining of the lungs (called the pleura). About 75 percent of all mesothelioma cases are of this type.

Mesothelioma cancer symptoms are caused by the inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers. When the microscopic fibers become embedded in the lining of the lungs, they can fester for years before developing into tumors and recognizable mesothelioma cancer symptoms.

MESOTHELIOMA CANCER SYMPTOMS

July 15, 2010 – Mesothelioma cancer symptoms usually appear decades after occupational asbestos exposure, sometimes up to 40 years later, because of the disease’s long latency period.

The first mesothelioma cancer symptom that often occurs is chest pain, originating from the presence of excess fluid in the pleural cavity known as pleural effusion, an abnormal build-up of fluid between the lung tissue membranes.

The rapid growth of pleural mesothelioma cancer tumors enlarges the pleural space, causing it to fill with fluid. Draining this fluid from the lungs helps relieve the painful chest pain symptoms. It is one of the first medical procedures doctors take in cases of malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Pleural effusions can also signal the possibility of future asbestos-related problems, including a serious, life-threatening disease like mesothelioma or asbestosis.

Other mesothelioma cancer symptoms

The most common symptom of mesothelioma is chest pain, but this may not occur until the disease is well advanced. Other symptoms include shortness of breath and a persistent cough.

A less common but still prevalent symptom of pleural mesothelioma is weight loss, while some patients show virtually no symptoms at all.

Legal options after mesothelioma cancer symptoms

Thousands of retired workers diagnosed with a job-related asbestos illness have filed asbestos claims against employers and asbestos product manufacturers who neglected to warn consumers about the dangers of working with their products.

If you exhibited certain cancer symptoms before being formally diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer symptoms, you may be eligible to receive financial restitution for your injury.
