UK researchers report on results of combination treatment for mesothelioma

UK researchers have reported on a combination treatment that may be an effective treatment for those suffering from pleural mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer that develops in the lining of the lungs, which is called the pleura or pleural membrane. Pleural mesothelioma is caused by repeated exposure to asbestos dust.

The combination treatment involves Alimta (pemetrexed) and Paraplatin (carboplatin). In a study, the combination treatment was used on 49 patients diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma. The treatment helped to improve control of the disease in about 70% of the patients. The treatment was tolerated well by the patients and did not lead to any treatment related mortality.
