MESOTHELIOMA DOCTORS

Weitz & Luxenberg is now helping patients and clients connect with the top mesothelioma doctors in the United States.

In most cases, mesothelioma doctors are located in larger cities and are associated with top-notch universities and cancer research centers. Mesothelioma is typically treated by a team of doctors and surgeons, rather than by a single physician. You may encounter, for example, specialists called oncologists, thoracic surgeons and pulmonologists during the course of your mesothelioma treatment.

Oncologists. Generally, patients begin seeing an oncologist after receiving a referral from their family doctor or general physician. Oncologists are concerned with diagnosing the exact type of cancer a patient has, and developing a program designed to treat the type and stage of cancer effectively. Many oncologists specialize in certain types of cancer. There are dozens of mesothelioma-specialized oncologists across the country. Oncologists' specialties also break down across the categories of cancer treatment, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Thoracic surgeons. A thoracic surgeon specializes in performing surgery in the chest area. For a newly diagnosed mesothelioma patient, the thoracic surgeon may be asked to perform a biopsy to help diagnose the patient’s disease. Later, if the biopsy suggests that surgery is an appropriate treatment, a thoracic surgeon will perform the surgery.

Pulmonologists. A pulmonologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the, lungs, heart, blood vessels and all organs that work together to help a person breathe. For a mesothelioma patient, shortness of breath is a frequent symptom. A pulmonologist would try to improve the patient’s lung function and minimize the effects of the disease. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR), the two most important tests in diagnosing asbestos-related disease are pulmonary function tests and chest radiographs.

The following is a list of some of the most recognized mesothelioma doctors in the conutry. Many of them are involved in research and patient care, and are qualified to provide patients with the latest information on mesothelioma treatments, mesothelioma clinical trials, and other particulars of this asbestos-related disease diagnosed in some 3,000 individuals every year in the United States.
