In recent news about the dangers of asbestos exposure, a woman who developed mesothelioma from washing her husband's asbestos-contaminated work clothes has filed a lawsuit for compensation.
The woman, who is 83, was exposed to asbestos dust and fibers from 1961 until 1984, according to court documents filed in New York.
Her husband worked as a pipefitter and welder at a power station in Manhattan and would return home with his overalls covered with asbestos dust.Court papers stated that she often embraced her husband while he was still wearing his work clothes.
Before doing his laundry she shook his overalls, exposing herself to the deadly fibers.
She was diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer this year and is currently receiving hospital treatment for the illness.
She has filed an asbestos lawsuit seeking damages from an asbestos manufacturer for knowing the risk of injury from inhaling asbestos dust and fiber but continuing to manufacture and supply the product.
Asbestos is found in many products used in buildings, including ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, boilers and sprayed coatings.
