June 14, 2010 – Compared with other states in the country, Ohio ranks No. 9 for asbestos-related deaths due to asbestosis and mesothelioma. That puts Ohio in the Top 10 worst states for occupational asbestos exposure and disease.
The study was based on an examination of state death certificates recorded by the federal government between 1979 and 2001. The results were published by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit public information organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
According to the study, asbestos exposure killed at least 1,609 people in Ohio between 1979 and 2001. The state’s urban centers of Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo showed the greatest concentration of asbestos-related fatalities.

Four counties in Ohio emerged as the worst. The mortality figures are so bad for these four Ohio counties that they made the EWG’s list of the Top 100 Counties in the United States recording the greatest number of deaths due to asbestos exposure.
They are: Cuyahoga (219 deaths); Hamilton (125); Lucas (106); and Summit counties (115). Cleveland is in Cuyahoga County; Cincinnati is in Hamilton County; and Toledo is in Lucas County.
According to the report, these death statistics “likely represent less than 20 percent of total asbestos mortality during that time,” because, “mesothelioma was not tracked by the federal government as a cause of death until 1999.”
Mesothelioma is the signature asbestos-related cancer and is diagnosed in 3,000 people every year in the United States. It is primarily caused by occupational asbestos exposure brought on by employers and asbestos product manufacturers who overlooked worker health safety to save expenses and boost profits.
