Exposure to asbestos is also known to cause serious diseases such as asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.Mr. Cyrus was a highly respected member of the Kentucky Legislature, where he served in the House of Representatives from 1976 until 1996. During his tenure in the House, he served as chair of the Labor and Industry Committee and Vice Chair of the Cities Committee. The elder Cyrus was firmly committed to helping working men and women as a member of the Kentucky AFL-CIO, where he served as secretary-treasurer from 1984-1998.
While it was not disclosed how Mr. Cyrus contracted mesothelioma, he was likely exposed during work as a rigger or during his service with the U.S. Air Force. Because the latency period between exposure to asbestos and the diagnosis of an asbestos-related disease is decades long, it is likely that Mr. Cyrus’ exposure occurred while he was a young adult.
