Former Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN Legislator Dies from Mesothelioma
in February 2009, the Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN Star Tribune reported on the death of former Minnesota Legislator Dennis Newinski. Mr. Newinski died on February 10, 2009 after fighting a two year battle with mesothelioma, a fatal form of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
The latency period after exposure to asbestos until victims are diagnosed with lung diseases is decades long. Mr. Newinski was 64 years old at the time of his death, making it probable that his exposure to this dangerous carginogen occurred when he was in his 20s or 30s.
Mr. Newisnki was elected to the Minnesota House in 1990. In 1994, he ran against the democratic incumbant to serve in the U.S. Congress, but lost in a very close race. He also ran for Congress in both 1996 and 1998. Mr. Nowinski remained active in politics in the region, most recently delivering the invocation address at the 2008 Minnesota Republican State Convention.
Like Mr. Newinski, those exposed to asbestos are at risk to develop serious such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
