In recent news about the dangers of exposure to asbestos, a carpenter who was diagnosed with mesothelioma says his mother died of the same disease after exposure to asbestos while washing his work overalls.

The terminal mesothelioma cancer had now developed in the tissues covering his lungs.

Mesothelioma is common in people exposed to asbestos and can take decades to develop.

It was during the early years of his career in carpentery that he first came into contact with asbestos, when he worked as an apprentice carpenter in the 1960s.

He recalled that all of his jobs put him and his work overalls in contact with asbestos but he was never made aware of the risks.

“We did not wear protective clothing or carry out other safety measures," he said.

He is now on medication and has had chemotherapy and radiotherapy and fluid drained from his lungs.

His mother died from mesothelioma cancer four years ago aged 82.

She contracted the disease from washing his work overalls when he was serving his carpentry apprenticeship.
