SEABEES AT RISK FOR MESOTHELIOMA CANCER
The busy construction workers of
the U.S. Navy were regularly exposed to toxic asbestos materials
U.S. Navy “Seabees” stung by asbestos during military service can die of mesothelioma cancer. If you have a Naval veteran in your family diagnosed with mesothelioma, determine your eligibility for compensation at no cost via the form at left.
“The Seabees” made up the construction battalions of the United States Navy,
and were recruited from civilian construction trades to become a force of some
325,000 men during World War II. Their job was to build military bases,
buildings and barracks, roadways, airstrips, bridges and power
plants.
Unfortunately, the nature of the Seabees’ duties often involved
exposure to toxic substances that were used in different construction compounds.
Among the more dangerous substances that Seabees encountered was asbestos, a dangerous carcinogen that caused all
ranks of Naval seamen to contract fatal mesothelioma later in their lives.
A U.S. senator recently estimated that retired Naval seamen with mesothelioma make up approximately one-third of all mesothelioma patients in the country.
For decades, literally tons of asbestos were used in products approved by the Navy for use in the shipbuilding industry, and in the construction of onshore facilities. It is estimated that approximately 300 asbestos-containing products were used by shipyards in the building of our nation's warships, and nearly 3,000 products may have been used in onshore construction.
Asbestos was later found to be carcinogenic and its use was discontinued in the late 1970s. Prior to that, however, countless military personnel were exposed to this toxic material.
Because mesothelioma can take decades before it develops into a recognizable cancer, Seabees in the military as far back as the 1950s are only now being diagnosed with mesothelioma. Once diagnosed, patients often die within one year.
Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma.
