We help shipwrights with mesothelioma seek legal action against asbestos manufacturers.
Recently, a shipwright with mesothelioma contacted us to discuss his exposure to asbestos.
Some of his exposure was secondhand, as he worked alongside pipe laggers--tradesmen that handled the asbestos.
He did recall the scenario where he was setting a bracket next to a pipe and accidentally hit the pipe and dislodged some asbestos.
He also recalls direct exposure to asbestos where there were steam lines from the boiler carrying high-pressure steam to other units like a winch or an auxiliary motor.
Shipwrights he worked with did everything from outfitting, to establishing the cribbing on the launching gang, to shoring and working on the outfitting docks.
He recalled that after the war, most transporters were converted to passenger ships and there was a lot of shifting of equipment and pipes.
The ships were gutted and completely revamped. In that process, shipwrights would do all the woodworking, finish work, and plates. When everything was in place, it would be insulated, and the pipes would be lagged.
Unfortunately, shipwrights worked alongside the laggers that cut sections of asbestos to fit the pipes. Then they would attach the sections with a paste and wrap it with asbestos wrapping.
In that process, asbestos dust and fibers became airborne. He recalls, "Sometimes it was so thick you couldn’t see five feet in front of you. It was white and hung in the welding fumes like smog. Nobody ever said it was dangerous."
Many shipwrights have come forward to say their work environment led to a diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer from asbestos.
