Shipyard workers: You have a right to compesation for your mesothelioma diagnosis.
A former shipyard worker who is gravely ill from mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos, has been awarded damages of around $200,000 reported the Daily Record on August 20, 2008.
The man, who is just 63, worked on as a painter from the late '50s until 1973.
His former employer, a shipbuilding company, admitted liability but contested the size of the award.
After hearing medical evidence, the judge decided that without the lung cancer, the man might have lived for another 10 years.
Shipyard workers are at risk for developing asbestos diseases due to the many ship-building products that were formerly made with the dangerous mineral.
Many have come forward to say their work environment led to a diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer from asbestos.
