Mesothelioma Shipyards Risk for Veterans and other Workers Exposed to Asbestos
You may be visiting our website because you worked in shipyards and have concerns about mesothelioma or lung cancer from asbestos.
According to the National Cancer Institute, about 2,000 cases of mesothelioma cancer are diagnosed in the United States, yearly. Medically speaking, mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the covering of the lung or the lining of the pleural and abdominal cavities; it is associated with exposure to asbestos.
Exposure to asbestos has also been proven to cause lung cancer. In addition, smokers exposed to asbestos are at higher risk for developing lung cancer.
Many Americans in decades past were exposed to deadly asbestos fibers while serving in naval shipyards during World War II, and subsequent wars. American automotive plants also exposed factory workers to asbestos. Since mesothelioma can take decades to develop (up to 50 years in some cases), these workers are only now being diagnosed.
According to government sources, veterans who served in some of the following major occupations may have been exposed to asbestos:
- Pipefitters
- Mining
- Milling
- Shipyard work
- Insulation work
- Demolition of old buildings
- Carpentry and construction
- Manufacture and servicing of friction products, such as clutch facings and brake linings
- Manufacture and installation of products, such as roofing and flooring materials, asbestos cement sheet and pipe products, and military equipment.
During World War II (WWII), millions of individuals employed in American shipyards and American Navy veterans were exposed to asbestos since it was widely used for military ship construction.
