MESOTHELIOMA SURVIVAL RATE

The average mesothelioma survival rate after diagnosis is four to 18 months, says the American Cancer Society

Mesothelioma symptoms typically arise decades after initial exposure to asbestos and are often mistaken for symptoms of other diseases. Consequently, mesothelioma is usually diagnosed in the latter stages of its progression, when surgery is no longer an option. This translates to a very poor survival rate.

Mesothelioma survival rate

April 6, 2010 – Mesothelioma is the deadliest of asbestos-related diseases, with a survival rate that hovers near zero, despite advances in the treatment of mesothelioma.

Though mesothelioma is considered a rare disease by comparison to others, the World Health Organization estimates that about 90,000 individuals worldwide die from mesothelioma every year. The number of cases are expected to peak in the United States in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Currently, 3,000 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed annually in the U.S.

Mesothelioma cancer is caused by long-term occupational asbestos exposure. Retired workers from the construction, automotive and maritime industries, and even the U.S. Navy, make up the vast majority of mesothelioma cases today.

The American Cancer Society estimates the average survival rate of a mesothelioma patient, after diagnosis, is four to 18 months. According to most studies, however, the median life expectancy is less than a year.
