Have you been exposed to taconite dust and diagnosed with mesothelioma?
Dozens of new cases of mesothelioma were reported among iron miners working in Minnesota’s Iron Range. In response, several studies are underway to determine whether there is an identifiable link between mesothelioma and taconite dust.
A story reported by Minnesota Public Radio in March 2007 indicates the Minnesota Department of Health plans to launch a study to determine whether exposure to taconite dust led mine workers to develop mesothelioma.
In addition, an April 2007 article in the Grand Rapids Herald Review discusses the Minnesota Department of Health’s proposals for two studies to determine whether fragments and fibers present in taconite dust are contributing factors in the increase in the number of miners being diagnosed with mesothelioma.
A second study, which would use existing information from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, would review this information and assess the potential risks from taconite.
