The National Cancer Institute defines virotherapy as a treatment using a virus that has been changed in the laboratory to find and destroy cancer cells without harming healthy cells. It is a type of targeted therapy. It is also called oncolytic virotherapy and viral therapy.

Scientists are researching new diagnostic tests and treatments for patients diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer, including reasearch in the field of Virotherapy.

In a research study at the Division of Human Gene Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, doctors and scientists are working on virotherapy. This research focuses on attempting to create a very specific type of virus that would only attack lung cancer tumor cells.

These studies are still in the early stages, however, you should ask your medical team about any new treatments for mesothelioma, including clinical trials.
