Treatment for Mesothelioma: Chemotherapy
In February 2004, the Food and Drug Administration approved the chemotherapy drug Pemetrexed (which is marketed under the brand name Alimta) for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma.
Pemetrexed in combination with the chemotherapy agent Cisplatin is used in
treatment of malignant pleural
mesothelioma when the patient is not a good candidate for
surgery.
According to the the drug maker's website, Altima, when given
with cisplatin, is the first and only chemotherapy drug to be approved by the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of patients with malignant
pleural mesothelioma when surgery is not an
option.
