Treatment for Mesothelioma: Chemotherapy drug Pemetrexed
The following is provided as an information source only, and should not be taken as an endorsement of this or any other drug.
In February 2004, the Food and Drug Administration approved Pemetrexed for treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma, a type of tumor of the lining of the lung. Pemetrexed is prescribed under the brand name Alimta.
The mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body. Cancer in this part of the body is rare. Mesothelioma is usually associated with a history of asbestos exposure. When asbestos fibers and dust are lodged in the lung, they attach to the outer lung lining and chest wall. The latency period for symptoms to appear is sometimes 30 to 40 years after exposure. By the time someone exposed to asbestos is diagnosed with Mesothelioma, the disease is usually advanced.
