In February 2004, the Food and Drug Administration approved Pemetrexed for treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma, a type of tumor of the lining of the lung. Pemetrexed is prescribed under the brand name Alimta.

The mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body. Cancer in this part of the body is rare.
