Alimta is the brand name for Pemetrexed (pronounced
pem-a-trex-ed), a chemotherapy drug that is prescribed as treatment for pleural
mesothelioma, a
serious form of lung
cancer linked to exposure to asbestos. Alimta is
usually prescribed along with Cisplatin, another chemotherapy
drug.
Alimta is a colorless fluid and is given as a as a drip (infusion)
either through a a fine tube (called a cannula) inserted into a vein or by a
central line (which is inserted under the skin into a vein near the collarbone),
or into a or into a PICC line (which is inserted into a vein in the crook of the
arm).
