Northshore Mining Company will square off against the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy in court on an asbestos legal issue, according to the Northlands News Center on Feb. 20, 2008.
The mining company is attempting to nix its permit limit on asbestos
emissions.
According to the article, the current standard requires that
the amount of asbestos fibers in the air around the Silver Bay plant must be
equal or less than the amount in St. Paul's air.
Many worry that
eliminating the standard from the company's permit would put locals in Silver
Bay at risk of developing asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma,
asbestosis and lung cancer.
