Many home appliances contain asbestos

Despite the known dangers of illnesses stemming from exposure to asbestos, many consumer products used in homes every day still contain this dangerous carcinogen.

Because of the long latency period between exposure to asbestos and the development of symptoms of diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis, these home appliances should never be opened for any reason.

Common home appliances known to contain asbestos include:

Hair dryers, curling and flat irons
Electric blankets
Popcorn Poppers
Toasters
Crock pots
Electric fryers, fry pans and other small kitchen appliances.

These appliances all contain asbestos in their heating elements to prevent the appliances from overheating and causing a fire hazard.

Gaskets
Automotive brake parts
Electrical tape

Home mechanics should follow manufacturer instructions carefully and wear respirator masks whenever working on brakes or gaskets, as both parts contain asbestos.  Care should also be used in cutting and using electrical tape to make sure the fibers are not released into the air.

Cigarette Filters
Stove Mats
Ironing Board covers

At one point, some cigarette manufacturers used asbestos in the filters of their cigarettes, but they have not been used since the 1950s.  Heat pads, stove mats, reflective potholders and mits, as well as ironing board covers also contained asbestos at one time.
