In lung cancer, the cells of the lung grow in an uncontrolled manner. This includes mesothelioma lung cancer, which is related to asbestos exposure.

Asbestos is a known carcinogen that his been linked to numerous health problems.

There are two main types of lung cancer: small-cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer.

Small-cell lung cancer grows and spreads more rapidly than non-small-cell lung cancer. Small-cell lung cancer also responds well to chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

The progress of lung cancer is divided into stages. The stage refers to the extent to which a cancer has spread in the body. Staging is important for determining treatment options because lung cancer therapies are geared toward specific stages.

Non-small-cell lung cancer has the following stages in order of severity:

  • In stage I, the cancer is limited to the lung.
  • In stages II and III, the cancer is limited to the chest.
  • In stage IV cancer has spread from the chest to other parts of the body.

Small-cell lung cancer has the following stages:
  • Limited stage refers to cancer that is confined to its area of origin in the chest.
  • Extensive-stage refers to cancer that has spread from the chest to other parts of the body.
