A bill that would fund a study of lung cancer and mining on the Iron Range was cleared by a Minnesota House Committee in March 2008, according to the Northland News in Duluth, Minnesota.
The Mesabi Daily News reported that the bill will provide $4.9 million dollars to study the correlation between taconite mining and mesothelioma.
The article said that researchers will measure the level of exposure to dust, the components of the dust and compare the results to miners and their spouses.
Last spring the state Health Department found that 52 miners had died from mesothelioma.
That number has since grown to 58.
Sadly, as the lawyers in the Weitz & Luxenberg Asbestos Litigation unit have seen through their work, this is a common example of people who were exposed to carcinogens simply because the powers that be failed to have in place routine safety measures.
