Minn. Senate Approves mesothelioma research project on miners in unanimous vote
In a vote on April 21, 2008, research funding for the disease mesothelioma, disproportionately striking Iron Range miners has been approved by the Minnesota Senate, according to the FoxNews website for St. Paul.
The article points out that mesothelioma is a rare type of lung cancer linked to asbestos and taconite dust.
The bill takes $4.9 million for four phases of research from a Department of Commerce-administered fund.
The University of Minnesota will host the research team. That group will analyze death records, conduct screenings of former and current workers, and conduct environmental reviews.
Research is expected to take up to five years.
