The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality recently issued a $6,358 penalty to a man for the unlawful handling of asbestos-containing material at his Athena residence, according to The East Oregonian newspaper. Such outrageous and reckless behavior may ultimately result in lawsuits.

The Oregonian report revealed that a DEQ air quality specialist said a neighbor complained to the department when they spotted the Oregon resident tearing down siding from an area of the house.

When the inspector investigated the site, he reportedly found shattered siding and informed the man the siding likely contained asbestos. He also told him that shattering the material released harmful fibers into the air.
