Information on the NIOSH document on mesothelioma
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s research document, named “Asbestos Fibers and Other Elongated Mineral Particles: State of the Science and Roadmap for Research” has been made available to the general public. NIOSH first made the document public in 2007. The topic is extremely important because asbestos is known to be definitively linked to the deadly disease, mesothelioma.
NIOSH is now seeking more comments and suggestions based on the first round of review. The report was first put together to address the many concerns related to the risk of exposure to hazardous materials, including asbestos, while at work. It also covered the toxic nature of asbestos fibers and “other elongated mineral particles” and called for more research into the plethora of health issues that are associated with such hazardous materials. Exposure to asbestos has been connected to the development of mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that affects the lining of the lungs and other organs and has no known cure.
