Mesothelioma cases on the rise among Iron Range miners, who work with taconite
At a recent meeting of the Taconite Workers Lung Health Partnership, the Department of Health revealed that another case of deadly mesothelioma has been identified among Iron Range miners.
That brings the total fatal cases of the disease, to 59, reported WDIO-TV on
June 12, 2008.
At issue is whether those cases were caused by exposure to
taconite dust, which
contains some fibers that are chemically identical to asbestos.
The partnership gathered to
learn more about the critical health studies being done to understand why the
miners are succumbing to mesothelioma, a cancer nearly always associated with asbestos exposure.
According
to the news report, this summer, old health studies will be gathered and
analyzed, and doctors will start looking at current asbestos exposure
controls.
