High Incidence of Mesothelioma Among Taconite Miners Sparks Research.
The dean of the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health is calling it "the best shot we've had in 25 years" to research answers about incidences of mesothelioma that might be connected to mining taconite, according to an Associated Press report on March 25, 2008.
That endorsement is in response to a Senate committee's decision to back
nearly $5 million in research on the rare cancer found in unusually high numbers
in northeastern Minnesota.
The state Health Department has documented
nearly five dozen deaths from mesothelioma.
The university would lead the
studies in consultation with state health, natural resources and pollution
control officials. The goal is to complete all four areas of study within five
years.
Sadly, as the lawyers in the Weitz & Luxenberg Asbestos Litigation unit have seen through their
work, this is likely another example of people who were exposed to carcinogens
simply because the powers that be failed to have in place routine safety
measures.
Weitz & Luxenberg is a leading plaintiffs' law firm that
has represented people affected by mesothelioma for over 20 years. Men and women
diagnosed with mesothelioma or lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure may be entitled to
compensation from the companies responsible for their disease.
