University of Minnesota to Spearhead Study of Taconite and Mesothelioma

Amid the June 2007 controversy over the Minnesota Department of Health’s failure to release the results of findings regarding 35 former Iron Range workers diagnosed with Mesothelioma, Representative Tom Rukavina (MN-DFL) announced that the University of Minnesota would be leading a study regarding taconite and the miners who have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma, a serious form of lung cancer associated with exposure to asbestos.

According to Dr. Jeffrey H. Mandel, an Environmental Health Services professor at the University of Minnesota, the study will be conducted in three parts:

• A thorough evaluation of taconite and the dusts and fibers it releases into the environment. It is expected that this part of the study could be completed within one year.
  
  
• A study of Mesothelioma, including the factors relating to the miners contracting it and a study of the miners who have died from this rare form of lung cancer.
  
  
• A study of both current and former miners to see what kinds of lung diseases they are contracting.
