Mesothelioma: The National Cancer Institute defines virotherapy as a treatment using a virus that has been changed in the laboratory to find and destroy cancer cells without harming healthy cells. It is a type of targeted therapy. It is also called oncolytic virotherapy and viral therapy.

In a research study at the Division of Human Gene Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, doctors and scientists are working on virotherapy. This research focuses on attempting to create a very specific type of virus that would only attack tumor cells.
