Asbestos Used In Cement Products

Until the 1970s, asbestos was typically added to cement and cement products.  Exposure to the dangerous cancer-causing mineral is known to cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma cancer, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.

Asbestos and cement were first combined in the early 1900s to form a new building material.  The addition of asbestos to cement products provided extra durability, fire resistance, ease in processing, forming, installing, and overall economic benefits.

Unfortunately, what was not known was that asbestos-cement materials have severe, detrimental health effects.  Throughout the years, those who worked with asbestos-cement products were exposed to asbestos dust on a regular basis.

The act of cutting, grinding, sawing, sanding, or drilling these products caused asbestos fibers to be released into the air and, with no gear to prevent dust inhalation, workers breathed in the fibers and, decades later, developed serious asbestos-related diseases.

These diseases, including mesothelioma, have wrongfully and gravely hampered the lives of many workers and their families.
