Shipyard workers are at risk for developing asbestos diseases due to the many ship-building products that were formerly made with the dangerous mineral.

In recent news, a retired shipyard worker who is gravely ill from an asbestos-related illness has been awarded $200,000 in an asbestos lawsuit, reported BBC News on August 19, 2008.

The man, who is just 63, was diagnosed last year with the lung disease mesothelioma.

He brought a mesothelioma lawsuit against his former employers, a shipbuilding company.

In that case, the judge ruled that, without the illness, the man's life expectancy would have been longer.

Sadly, his doctors predict that he is unlikely to survive beyond the end of this year.

Much of the money will go toward his care, the BBC reported.

Many shipyard workers have come forward to say their work environment led to a diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer from asbestos.
