The number of people killed in a motorcycle collision rose for the ninth straight year in 2007, and statistics show that fatalities have more than doubled since 1998.

According to the latest figures issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), out of a total of 41,059 U.S. traffic fatalities in 2007, 13 percent, or 5,154, were motorcyclists.

More disturbing news is that in 2007, motorcycle deaths rose 6.6 percent and injuries from motorcycle accidents rose 17 percent.

In New York (NY) alone, 158 motorcyclists died last year, said the NHTSA.
