Question 1: Were you exposed to MTBE?
In order for us to file a successful MTBE claim on your behalf, you must have been exposed to MTBE. MTBE exposure usually happens when a gasoline storage tank containing MTBE leaks into a community's groundwater supply, causing contamination. MTBE has a turpentine-like flavor and odor. Your water supply must be tested to determine if it has been contaminated by MTBE.
Question 2: Did MTBE affect your water supply?
MTBE is hydrophilic, which means it actively seeks out water. If MTBE leaks into a groundwater supply, the entire groundwater supply can be contaminated. MTBE contamination is very expensive to clean up, and an MTBE lawsuit would seek to hold the oil company responsible for the contamination responsible for the cleanup costs.
Question 3: Was the MTBE leak caused by negligence?
Oil companies are aware of alternatives to MTBE that do not pollute groundwater, but choose to use MTBE anyway since it is a byproduct of their refinery process. If an oil company stores oil products with MTBE added, and those products are stored in leaking tanks, the companies may be negligent, and municipalities or individuals may be able to sue them for the costs of MTBE cleanup.
