Residents of Murphy, NC: Read about the Tainted Water in Your Area
The history of the groundwater contamination in Murphy, NC goes back many years.
The trouble began in 1987, when the EPA first
discovered toxins leaking from an underground storage tank into the water of
residents living on the border of Slow Creek.
The contamination was found
to have originated with Clifton Precision, a plant on N.C. 141 that cleaned and
serviced aircrafts. Clifton Precision is a subsidiary of Litton Industries,
which was acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2001.
The chemicals involved in
the Peachtree contamination--trichloroethylene (TCE), used for cleaning metal
parts, and tetrachloroethylene (PCE), used for metal degreasing--are reportedly
the same as ones that tainted residents’ water supply 20 years ago to the north
of the contaminated property, now owned by Moog Component Group.
This has
led the EPA to believe the contamination has spread from that original site. The
agency has expanded water testing in the area to the south and east of Moog’s
plant.
