North Carolina Medical Board Proposes Informational Web Site
According to an article published in June 2008 by the Greensboro News Record, the North Carolina Medical Board is proposing to develop an informational Web site designed to provide the public with an Internet venue to search for information about healthcare professionals.
The Web site proposal calls for listings for each physician and physicians’ assistant licensed to practice in the state. The listings would include professional credentials, affiliations, disciplinary actions, criminal records and malpractice judgments and settlements.
The North Carolina Medical Society, while supporting the Web site’s intentions, does raise a number of issues regarding malpractice cases in which a doctor or practice may find themselves involved.
The Society is suggesting that an independent review board review malpractice judgments and settlements to ensure that the information does not include inaccurate information such as cases where the doctor’s insurance carrier settles for a small amount, cases where a physician partners in a medical practice are sued doctor is brought into a lawsuit because of another doctor in their practice, etc.
